Videography vs Cinematography: Are We Cinematographers Yet?

Videography vs. Cinematography: What’s the Difference?

In very, very simple terms videography = simple and quick and not really thinking about the shot. Cinematography is all about thinking about the shot and the scene, building the light setup towards that, and interpreting the movements of actors and cameras to help tell a story. In other words, at some level, cinematography requires a whole lot more planning and executing while videography takes very little effort and just about anyone can do it.

I think there comes a moment - a really fun moment - when someone can look at themselves and say “I’m a cinematographer!” It’s a moment that takes a long time to get to. A lot of experiences, challenges, fails and successes get us there.

I share my experiences and how I knew when that switch happened for me. I talk about how I had imposter syndrome for a long time (still do sometimes), and how you can tell when you’ve made the switch yourself.
